Brain-Based Learning
Monday, October 12, 2026, 11 – 11:50am

Open to all students. Counts toward the Research Pathway in US 1100.*
Brain-based learning is a strategy that is founded on students obtaining a basic understanding of how the brain is naturally designed to learn. The physical functions of the brain—i.e., how neurons connect to create neural networks, neuroplasticity, and information processing—are illuminated so that students can be empowered to create their own learning and study strategies. Students can also use brain-based learning strategies to stave off burnout, increase concentration, adapt study strategies to the level of learning needed for different academic tasks. Attendees will obtain a foundational understanding of brain-based learning.

Do I Belong in STEM? Exploring Your STEM Identity
Friday, October 23, 2026, 1 – 2:30pm

You may use technology, data, science, or problem-solving every day without thinking of yourself as a "STEM person". But STEM skills show up in many fields. including Mass Communication, Health Information Management, and Agriculture, and they may play a bigger role in your future career than you realize.
In this interactive workshop, you'll explore what STEM identity means and how your experiences, interests, skills, and career goals shape the way you see yourself in relation to STEM.
Through short activities, self-assessments, and conversations with other students, you will:
* Discover how STEM connects to your major and future career.
* Identify STEM skills and strengths you may already have.
* Learn strategies for building confidence when working with STEM topics.
* Talk about imposter syndrome and why you don’t have to be a STEM major to belong in STEM spaces.
* Explore how your interests and abilities can grow as you gain new experiences.
You’ll complete a short STEM identity self-assessment at the beginning and end of the workshop to see whether—and how—your perspective changes.
You don’t need to be a scientist, engineer, or computer scientist to have a STEM identity. Come explore where STEM fits into your story.

Open to all students. Counts toward the Research Pathway in US 1100.*
Having an accurate self-concept is one of the most important factors for a successful researcher, as well as a successful student. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to give ourselves credit for the skills we possess and the talents we have spent years accumulating. In this session we will cover the importance of an accurate and balanced self-concept and the different types of social and academic capital we bring with us to the research setting (from Yusso and Tinto's work on student capital and persistence). Attendees will identify the types of capital and expertise they bring with them to their research experiences to construct a balanced self-concept. They will also discuss combating negative self-talk.
