• To be eligible for a Gilman scholarship, an applicant must meet the requirements listed under eligibility on the Gilman Website.

You must be a Pell Grant recipient to apply. Find out if you have a Pell Grant by looking at your Financial Aid package or by logging into StudentAid.gov.

If you are a current Pell Grant recipient and are hoping to study abroad in an upcoming summer or academic year, you should consider applying during the next application cycle. The Gilman accepts applications every March and October. Join the Canvas Guide to be reminded of upcoming information sessions.

  • Any undergraduate student who is eligible and planning to study abroad can apply through Texas State University. To find out more about the process for applying to study abroad, set up an advising appointment with Texas State University’s Education Abroad Office.

Texas State offers many resources to help you submit a competitive application for the Gilman Scholarship. We also offer self-service resources, group workshops, and one-on-one advising to help you draft a competitive application through our Gilman Canvas Guide.

  • You must apply to study abroad through Texas State’s Education Abroad Office. This is true even for Gilman Scholarship awardees. The Gilman Scholarship awards money for your study abroad but does not coordinate study abroad plans. You must apply to study abroad programs while also applying to a Gilman Scholarship.

If you are interested in studying abroad, watch a pre-recorded information session and set up an advising appointment with the Education Abroad Office.

You can begin the process of applying for a Gilman Scholarship even if you have not yet been accepted into a study abroad program. We encourage you to start drafting your Gilman application early. Given our campus education abroad deadlines, students are often not yet confirmed in a study abroad program when submitting their Gilman application, especially during the fall application cycle. You will be given tips on how to craft your application even as you finalize study abroad plans by working through our Canvas Guide.

  • The Gilman's three essay questions are your chance to tell the selection panelists about yourself and your decision to study abroad. The key to a successful application is drafting compelling essay questions and an impactful Service Project.  We recommend the following resources:
